FISH-IN-A-BOX
Over the Memorial Day weekend, several of our NFCG members gathered in Central Oregon for a 2-day, carving and painting class, which we referred to as "Fish-in-a-box". The class was hosted by Ray Dodge and headed up by Ed Barrett. Open level carvers worked side-by-side with beginning and intermediate level carvers to create a "half a fish' laying in a custom made wooden box. The goal was to make it look like a freshly caught "Juvenile Trout" laying in a net on top of some shoreline rocks. Carvers had their choice of carving a Rainbow, Brown, Brookie or Golden Trout.
A great time was had by all and everyone came away with nice fish carving addition for their coffee table.
The boxes were constructed and engraved prior to the class. The photos shown below speak for themselves. Great job guys and a special thanks to Ed Barrett who is a seemingly tireless promoter of our fish carving pattern.
"A Trout is a moment of beauty known only to those who seek it...."
Brooktrout / Bill Rice / La Pine, OR
Golden Trout / Ron Edwards / Albany, OR
Brown Trout / Allan Jones / La Pine, OR
Brooktrout / Gene Derfler / Salem, OR
Brown Trout / Brad Emery / La Pine, OR
Ray Dodge / Rainbow Trout / La Pine, OR
Scott Brown / Rainbow Trout / Oregon City, OR
Photos below (clockwise from top) show the "Group" hard at work, Ed Barrett preparing for the start of the class, with fish, fin and net blank pieces at ready and Ed preparing the special 2-part clear epoxy mix which was poured over each carving to simulate the water in the box as well as a trout freshly removed from the water. The effect was very convincing.
Note: If any of our members are interested in conducting a Fish-in-a-box class, we would be happy to provide patterns, plans and paint schedules upon request. However, we would recommend a single species be selected for such a class which would allow everyone to use the same plans and schedules. Group classes provide an excellent way to get to know your fellow carvers and enjoy the fellowship.
